Martial Arts Front Snap Kick

Martial Arts: Front Snap Kick

A common technique in the martial arts is the front snap kick. While not as flashy as some kicks, this technique has a lot going for it: it gets the job done, it fairly easy to learn, and when delivered with precision it can be incredibly fast and powerful. This article will explain what you need to do in order to perform a proper front snap kick. (Note: The front snap kick is often referred to as simply the front kick or the snap kick.)

What is a front snap kick? A front snap kick is a move in which you raise your knee up and then quickly snap your foot forward into your target. The direction of force for this move is straight in front of you, and the area that you strike with is the ball of the foot, the tough spot right behind your toes on the underside of your foot. It is a good general-purpose kick that can be used in board breaking, fighting, and is a common sight in forms (kata, poomse) as well. The kick can be delivered to the groin, stomach, chest, throat, face, or any other target that presents itself.

To deliver one of these kicks, assume your fighting position. The front kick can be performed with either the front leg or the back leg, but for now let's work on the back leg. The first movement is to shift your weight off your back foot and onto your front foot and then to lift up your knee and bring it in front of you. As you lift, bend your knee so that your thigh is up in front of you and your lower leg is coiled up underneath it, with your foot as close to your buttocks as you can get it. This preliminary movement can be thought of as the "chamber" of the kick: just like pumping a round into the chamber on a firearm. Once your knee is up, you are ready to fire.

Now, with your knee as high as you can get it, snap your foot, which is tucked in under your thigh, forward into the target. You are kicking at something straight in front of you. The part of your foot that you strike with on this kick is very important: an average beginner, trying out this kick for the first time, will have his foot in the same position it would be in if you were standing on the ground: the foot forming a ninety degree angle with the leg, looking basically like an L. That's not the correct way to do it. In a proper front kick, at the moment of impact, the entire leg, from the hip joint down to the toes, will make a straight line. You ankle should be extended, and your toes should be curled back so that you are striking with the ball of the foot. Hit with your toes, and you may find yourself in the hospital nursing a broken foot.

There is, in fact, quite a bit to this technique, and the more you practice it the more you will be able to absorb the finer points of it and incorporate them into your technique. For now, though, just stick to the basics: bring your leg up, chamber, and snap your foot into the target. The rest will come to you in time.

Less Cancer Founder Bill Couzens

Rye, New Hampshire (PRWEB) February 04, 2012

National Cancer Prevention Day, February 4th, 2012, serves to remind people that when looking at cancer they need to look at prevention, and reducing risks for human health and the environment. The resolution, entered in the House of Representatives, states that when we work to prevent cancer risks, it impacts human health, the environment, and the economy.

?Today on National Cancer Prevention Day, we recognize everyone who has been touched by this terrible disease, either directly or indirectly,? said Congressman Steve Israel, Co-Chairman of the House Cancer Caucus. Having introduced the resolution, he went on to say, ?I encourage all of us to think about prevention and how we can reduce risks in our environment and lead healthy lifestyles. I applaud the work that Less Cancer is doing in this regard.?

At the state level, the work for Cancer Prevention Day started when Resolution SJ 358 passed on February 3, 2011 in the Virginia Senate honoring the work of Less Cancer and naming February 4, 2011, and every succeeding February 4, as Cancer Prevention Day in the state of Virginia.

Virginia State Senator Jill Holtzman Vogel, who introduced the resolution, later said, "It is my honor to undertake the work to establish Cancer Prevention Day in the Commonwealth. The more energy and resources that we direct toward awareness, education and prevention, the more lives we save."

Bert Johnson (D ? Detroit, Michigan) introduced the resolution for February 4th of each year as ?Cancer Prevention Day? in Michigan. ?Nearly everyone knows a friend or loved one who has suffered from or lost someone to cancer,? Sen. Johnson said. ?As with most health care issues, raising awareness and increasing prevention is one of the best ways to combat this disease.?

Bill Couzens, who originally hails from Detroit, Michigan is a graduate of Wayne State University and the Founder and President of the nonprofit Next Generation Choices Foundation and the widely known Less Cancer Campaign. The Campaign has worked to raise awareness for the reduction of cancer risks. Founded in 2004, Next Generation Choices Foundation partners with communities to create and dispense educational tools that focus on environmental health advocacy and lifestyle choices.

The public charity was formed in response to the escalating cases of cancer and the lack of education and knowledge about potential causes. Couzens has been recognized by Congress in addition to the Commonwealth of Virginia for his work in initiating and creating best practices to reduce pesticide drift in health effected communities such as schools. He has been published in a number of periodicals and has been a speaker on the topic of reducing harmful environmental exposures linked to cancer. Couzens regularly speaks on human health and environment issues.

Next Generation Choices Foundation Board is Chaired By Thomas M. Sherman, MD, and Board Members include Bill Couzens, Greg Lam, Ronald B. Herberman MD, Veronique Pittman, Maryann Donovan PhD, MPH, Science Reporter Miles O'Brien, John Couzens, Stormy Stokes Hood.

Feeding Habits Of Spiders

Feeding Habits of Spiders

Spiders are living animals and they therefore need to eat just as you and I need to eat. Because spiders are predatory animals eating means first catching some other living animal. Most spiders are not fussy, though some have definite preferences and some have specific hunting techniques that catch them a particular type of prey.

Most spiders eat only living or freshly killed food, and most are not particular about their prey. Having said this many spiders will take dead prey in captivity and in some species it is not uncommon for spiders to be scavengers when the opportunity arises. For example the Mouse Spider (Scotophaeus) is known to steal dead insects in the wild. Also certain social spiders are known to scavenge the dead bodies of other colony members.

Spiders can taste their food and some items are rejected because of taste. Unlike humans however, spiders taste their food with their tarsi using chemosensitive hairs. Thus if you keep spiders you will notice that some spiders will not eat certain bugs and ticks. Different species of spider have different ideas about what is good to eat and what isn't. For instance many spiders won't eat woodlice although the house spiders in the genera Tegenaria will.

However there are some spiders, and groups of spiders, that do have particular prey items they specialise in. Among these are spiders in the genera Dysdera specialise in eating woodlice, preferring them to other foods. Other spiders with specialised tastes include the Pirate Spiders in the family Mimetidae which live exclusively on other spiders.

Pirate spiders protect themselves by having a potent quick acting toxin that immobilises their prey after just one quick bite to a leg extremity. They will also trick spiders out of their retreats by mimicking mates of prey caught in the web.

There are also ant Spiders in the family Zodariidae that specialise in eating ants. Ants are potentially dangerous prey and Zodariids such as those in the genus Zodarium that eat ants attack their prey quickly making a single bite and then moving away until the ant is overcome.

Ants are very common animals in most environments and it is not surprising therefore that there are ant specialists in other spider families, Callilepsis nocturna from the Gnaphosidae (on Formica spp.) and species of Salticidae on Pseudomyrmex spp.

For spiders that actively hunt their prey the first step in catching dinner is to locate it. Spiders that choose to sit outside their burrows or hideaways and wait for some suitable organism to wander past like some tarantulas and wandering spiders, rely on vibrations to tell them what is going on.

Such spiders as Cupennius can hunt just as effectively with their eyes covered as with them working. However spiders that go out actively looking for prey and hunt it down, such the wolf spiders and particularly the jumping spiders rely much more heavily on sight.

Nearly all spiders use venom to immobilise their prey before feeding. This makes it easy for them to feed on otherwise dangerous animals. Some Crab Spiders will catch Bumble Bees far heavier than themselves.

Whichever way the prey is caught it needs to be eaten and spiders practice what is called external digestion. This means that enzymes and other digestive juices are injected or spat into the prey's body. The soft tissues are broken down by these juices and sucked up by the spider. For spiders, soup is the only thing on the menu.

Some spiders such as tarantulas and many of the orb-web spiders use the teeth on the basal segment of the chelicerae to mash their prey while they are feeding. In these cases all that remains after the spider has finished is a small dark blob of cuticle. Smaller spiders, especially those that feed on larger prey such as the Thomisidae bite only a small hole in the cuticle of their prey and suck the juices out through this. In this case what is left is a pretty intact shell of the prey animal.

While most spiders feed on invertebrates most of the time, they will take vertebrates when they can. Reports of Dolmedes catching small fish several times her own weight, of Leucorhestris taking small lizards up to its own weight and of Lycosids and Pisaurids catching tadpoles and small fish are fairly well documented. Evidence of large spiders taking small birds is also known in the tropics.

Tales of tarantulas taking snakes in the wild are harder to verify though the first description of them doing so was written by the Roman Pliny 2000 years ago. However there is no doubt they will take them in captivity and therefore probably would take them in the wild when the opportunity arrives. In captivity tarantulas have been recorded killing and eating 30cm pit vipers and 45cm rattlesnakes as well as frogs and lizards.

Stranger still, in 1924 Reginald Pocock described finding a Poecilotheria regalis feeding on a rat in India, though no mention is made of whether the spider actually killed the rat. Strangest of all is a tale from Australia written in 1919 by a Mr Chisolm.

He describes finding a chicken that had been killed and dragged 16 metres (50 feet) to a burrow by a Barking Spider Selenocosima spp.. The chicken was much too big to be pulled into the hole and was found with one leg down the hole with the spider hanging on to that leg.

Nikki Fox has studied spiders for over 2 years to help beat her own fear of them.
She is sharing her advice on arachnophobia and spider prevention in the home or workplace on a special website www.spiderpanic.com

Last year Bill Gates released mosquitoes into the audience for a TED talk on malaria.

This year Nathan Myhrvold tracked a swarm of flying mosquitoes with off-the-shelf consumer electronics technology. Across the full stage, each mosquito was lit up in green.

Nathan: “This is where I put the pinky to the lip. We are going to blast the mosquitoes out of the air with a laser.”

He is clearly joyous when he fries the wings off the little suckers with a femtosecond laser.

Nathan: “This is very satisfying.”

Having studied their wing beat cadence, he can interrogate the species and gender of insect before shooting them out of the air. And since the wing muscles keep flapping during the death spiral, they can also avoid unnecessary zapping on the way down.

Initially, they could be used for ring defenses around malaria clinics (you really don't want any mosquitoes going in there), but his excitement is around UAVs patrolling the swamps.

P.S. For some reason, he uses the each same Big Scary Laser warning sign as the last femtosecond laser lab I visited.
